ABSTRACT

The development of the Internet also permits science centers to reach out much more broadly, in terms of audiences. In order to achieve the goal of significantly enhancing science literacy, science centers are becoming partners with many other enterprises, including schools, colleges, universities, corporate laboratories, governmental laboratories, research institutes, etc. The major challenges are in being competitive with the many alternative attractions available to families and in attracting families who have not traditionally attended science centers. Different cultural patterns as well as shortages of time and funds often make this latter challenge particularly difficult; making exhibits and programs more interactive and relevant will help. Science centers also have expertise in presenting science in a way that the public can understand and they can provide a significant service to members of the press or other persons interested in enhancing their skills in this crucial area.
