ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects thinking of personnel in the NASA National Space Grant Program on how to implement scientific and technical literacy. Organized as a network among the types of institutions listed, Space Grant has initiated a multipronged program to influence space education through networking. The Act—Public Law 100–147— cited broad objectives such as assuring the economic vitality of the United States, and the quality of life of its citizens through the understanding, assessment, development and utilization of space resources. Evaluation of the 52 state programs and the national program indicates that networking has been mainly successful in the state consortia and that it constitutes a powerful mechanism for positive change. Industry and government, in conjunction with Space Grant institutions of higher education, have been instrumental in developing curriculum for the university level. The goal of forming a national network of institutions with interests in aerospace science, engineering and technology has been accomplished; advantages, each year, become more apparent.
