ABSTRACT

The groundwater model and the trial results indicate, that it is possible to efficiently infiltrate lake water with a very high algae content. Especially the fact, that in the period when the water has the highest algae content (in summer) it is possible to use water without pretreatment (sedimentation) for surface spreading on the grass covered areas. The water quality of the “new” groundwater is generally good although the nitrate content exceeds the highest guideline value. The nitrate content is expected to drop with time, as the nitrate probably derives from former agricultural activities at the site. In Denmark, artificial recharge is not a widely used supplement to groundwater and surface water abstraction in water supply, as is the case in many other countries. This paper presents the results of a monitoring programme of a trial artificial recharge plant operating since 1995. The groundwater model shows that a high plant efficiency can be obtained when groundwater abstraction is more or less equal to the amount of water that is recharged artificially.
