ABSTRACT

Artificial recharge projects are of critical importance to California in meeting ever-increasing demands for water. Recharge projects are regulated under strict State standards designed to ensure protection of public health, especially where reclaimed wastewater is used for recharge. Use of ASR wells is relatively new to the state, but is now gaining widespread acceptance. Operation and testing of ASR facilities has produced new information regarding chemical changes in water quality during injection and storage of water. This paper provides an overview of California well recharge projects and related water quality issues.
