ABSTRACT

The ambitious plans of Egypt to expand its habitable lands are being challenged by its limited water resources. This fact led the government into considering the wastewater reuse as an important dimension of water resources planning. Artificial recharge with wastewater, due to its advantages over the conventional reuse of wastewater, can be an added dimension to the wastewater reuse policy of the Egyptian government. The preparation of an application plan should clearly identify both locations and methods for the application among other parameters. Determination of optimum locations and suitable methods requires the optimization of a combination of intrinsic characteristics of the wastewater, and the proposed locations in addition to other environmental and economical considerations. Due to the complexity of the involved factors, a scoping process is needed before the final identification of methods and locations of application. The preliminary screening process is described in this paper.
