ABSTRACT

The behaviour of F is studied in the Kuivala plant area where high F contents (over 1.5 mg/l) are sporadically measured in water. The introduced lake water and waters from 11 observation tubes are analyzed since June 1994. The observation tubes are separated into 4 groups according to the increasing groundwater character, decreasing temperature and COD and increasing silica content. Samples from 5 deep-soil profiles, 3 top-soil profiles (down to 2 m) and additional topsoil samples were studied. Mineral studies, total F determinations and leaching experiments were undertaken. The behaviour of F in top-soil profiles from natural soil and sprinkler infiltration area as well as in a deep-soil profile are presented in this paper. F is scavenged by the A and B horizons of the podzolic soils especially in the sprinkler infiltration area. The weakly weathered deep-soils contain the largest amounts of leachable and total fluorine.
