ABSTRACT

Column experiments, adsorption studies and microbial analyses of aquifer material were found to be useful at the estimation of retention capacity and function of aquifer material in removing NOM from the infiltrated water at Baltezers artificial groundwater recharge (AGR) plant (Latvia). Natural organic matter (NOM) was used as a limiting factor at the determination of necessary water retention time in an aquifer during artificial recharge of groundwater. Biodegradation and adsorption of NOM during water passages throughout all the aquifer were considered to be important removal processes.
