ABSTRACT

The construction of a rockfill embankment as part of the works for a new Valencia-Madrid motorway at Contreras Reservoir has involved an enormous task on achieving compaction requirements, quality control of materials and instrumentation. Gestese SL-Proyex Valencia SA (specialised firms in instrumentation and control for civil engineering works), subordinately to the Division for Quality Ensure of the Contractor (ACS), made the job for the Spanish Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Fomento). This paper presents a research project in which FLAC has been used to model the rockfill as linear-elastic, non linear-elastic and elasto-plastic material. Results have been compared to those obtained from settlement cells and the conclusions will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of rockfill structures behaviour.
