ABSTRACT

During the construction of the 37 km (24 by means of Tunneling Boring Machines, TBMs) Madrid Metro extension, a vast amount of monitoring data has been gathered. This data has been used to validate and qualify simulation tools describing the deformations induced by tunneling operations. In order to account for the deformations ahead of the face and the effect of the shield, a FLAC3D model has been used. The full excavation sequence is reproduced including the gap between the ground and the liner. The model allows an easy modification of several parameters of the soil, tunnel and TBM. A comparison between observed and simulated vertical displacements has been carried out. The results of the analysis show that the observed settlements could have been reasonably predicted by using the proposed numerical model.
