ABSTRACT

This paper describes the modification of a biodegradation model for landfilled waste. A formulation which accounts for moisture effects in the decomposition of solid cellulolytic matter is presented. Simulations of an idealised waste column show that under zero advective flux conditions, the resulting model captures a number of key features of landfill biodegradation behaviour. When a small infiltrative flux is introduced, the variation of volatile fatty acid concentration and solid organic fraction depletion varies significantly in both space and time.
