ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the impact of the material model in the context of the numerical simulation of driving a tunnel. Both, the simple elastic-plastic models according to the Drucker-Prager and the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, as well as a more sophisticated model like a cap model are employed in 2D FE-analyses of a shallow tunnel of a Viennese subway line. The results, in particular the displacements and stresses in the soil and the stressing of the tunnel lining are compared and discussed with respect to the different material models they are based on. Comparison with available field data for the specific tunnel suggests the conclusion that the cap model leads to conservative results.
