ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the design of shotcrete lining of shallow NATM tunnels. After a brief discussion of merits and demerits of some available national codes, a concept for dimensioning shotcrete lining is proposed. The dimensioning of shotcrete lining can be best done with the help of the bearing capacity diagram. The formulae underlying the bearing capacity diagram are derived. The structural rib is taken into account. The paper is rounded up by a case study of a tunnel on Germany’s high speed railway link between Cologne and Frankfurt.
