ABSTRACT
This contribution reviews the various approaches that have been used to identify the predominant terminal electron process in aquifer sediment. It is concluded that most of the traditionally used methods are fraught with ambiguities. Presently sediment incubations and radiotracer methods are most reliable and promising. The latter methods allow high resolution rate measurements of organic matter decomposition in sediments.
