ABSTRACT

We incubated aquifer sediments from a single aquifer under atmospheric conditions for 53 days to determine the reactivity of the reductants present. The stoichiometric slopes between O2 consumption and CO2 production were used to evaluate the relative importance of the ongoing redox processes. Respiration of organic matter (OM) and pyrite oxidation were the major processes occurring, although there is also evidence for siderite oxidation.
