ABSTRACT

A survey was made of nitrate concentrations in potable water sources in Calabar Municipality. The area is characterised by unlined pit toilets and indiscriminate disposal of wastes. Results show that 80% of the water samples analysed had nitrate concentration above the international permissible level. In addition, nitrate showed good correlation with conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chloride and sulphate. The implication of these results to water protection and management in the area is discussed.
