ABSTRACT

In this short paper we investigate the flow and transport processes that cause the salt accumulation and leaching in the unsaturated soil zones under the hydrological conditions of the Karla plain in Thessaly, Greece. Simulation models have been set up with the FEFLOW finite-element simulator in 1D, 2D and 3D. We have identified a salt barrier effect and a salt flushing effect which are the dominant transport mechanisms in dry and wet years, respectively.
