ABSTRACT

Although today a large percentage of the work on methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE) is carried out in North-America, MTBE is not only a North-American problem. In Europe, MTBE use is widespread, particularly in unleaded Super (98) gasoline as for example up to 11 vol% in Austria, up to 9 vol% in Denmark and up to 14 vol% in Germany. However, this compound is very rarely monitored in these countries at gasoline spill sites. On the other hand, at several sites in Germany, where MTBE was analyzed for, severe contamination was detected.
