ABSTRACT

Fluctuations in atmospheric pressure have been observed to cause venting of caves and open wells. A check-valve has been developed to allow venting outward only, preventing inhaled air from dispersing and diluting vadose-zone contaminant plumes. A wind-turbine, of the type used on residential roof-tops, has been positioned and sealed above the well to enhance flow. Performance has been observed to be site-specific, with flows varying from 50 liters per day for a single well at one site to 68,000 liters per day at another.
