ABSTRACT

Almost 20 years ago, contamination involving chlorinated solvents was detected in the groundwater flow under a former hazardous waste landfill in Mühlacker in southwestern Germany. Since then, efforts have been made to clean up the landfill and the unsaturated zone beneath to protect the groundwater from further contaminations. Since July 1999 remediation by steam injection is being conducted, and showing good performance in cleaning up the unsaturated zone.
