ABSTRACT

The studied site is located in South-eastern Tatarstan. Biryuchevskii and Mikulinskii springs had been contaminated by sodium and calcium chlorides and by other compounds associated with subsurface brines. The work on site characterization included the soil-boring, groundwater sampling, surface geophysics and borehole logging, laboratory analysis of core materials, and tritium/3He groundwater dating. These data were used for groundwater flow and transport model creation and verification. Following alternative scenarios of groundwater remediation were considered: a) self-remediation under natural conditions; b) pumping the most contaminated water from wells.
