ABSTRACT

The use of particle tracking modeling for determination of capture zones for ground water exploitation wells is well known and plays an important role in the protection of groundwater resources. In many cases though the determination of capture zones is based on stationary groundwater flow models, which might be rather unreliable. Capture zones determined from simulations with a particle tracking model in which the water flow is determined in a fully integrated dynamic surface water/groundwater flow model may be more reliable. Furthermore, it is important to investigate the influence of the dynamic behavior of flows in the sub-surface on the capture zones and infiltration areas.
