ABSTRACT

A stochastic Lagrangian methodology is used to derive expressions for the temporal moments of non-degrading and degrading partitioning tracers in an aquifer of spatially variable hydraulic conductivity that contains a heterogeneously distributed residual non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL). The resulting moment equations are expressed in terms of the statistics of the hydraulic conductivity and the NAPL content for the special case of a perfectly stratified aquifer, and the implications of spatial variability and degradation for parameter estimation are investigated.
