ABSTRACT
Loose pre-cast concrete blocks with a stepped profile form a cost effective means of providing a spillway that utilizes the hydrodynamics of the flow to obtain stability. In 1997 CIRIA published a Design Guide to allow engineers to make use of the technology. The document covers the design of a new installation, and post-construction maintenance and inspection of the spillway. The content of the Design Guide and a summary of key provisions are outlined in the paper.
