ABSTRACT

In France an Engineer’s Diploma is conferred after 5 years of studies following the baccalaureate (Bac + 5). This Diploma is recognized by authorities, but an official professional registration does not exist in this field. Civil Engineering formation in France is characterized by a wide variety of curricula. Universities or schools are differing in between by teaching programmes, mode of recruitment (traditional competition, examination of personal files, interview) and even by the ministry they belong to. In all cases, the first and second years of study after entering these schools is dedicated to a general scientific formation; the choice of the field of activity occurs not earlier than “Bac + 3” level. There is also a DEA (Diploma of Deepened Studies) which may be prepared on a given subject during the last (fifth) year of university studies (Bac + 5).
