ABSTRACT

This paper presents an analysis that allows to define the goals that geotechnical teachers should reach in the near future, as well as the strategies that should be followed to achieve them. The analysis mainly consists in taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses that internally exists in the civil engineering schools, as well as the opportunities and challenges that prevail around those schools. As result of this study, several important conclusions and recommendations are obtained. Among those recommendations, that could be useful for universities from all over the world, are the following. 1) In order to update and be aware of the state of knowledge in geotechnical engineering, the geotechnical teachers should take advantage of all the opportunities and scholarships available from the public and private institutions to do so. 2) A Permanent Educational Committee should be created by each national geotechnical Society, in order to have a directorship and exchange experiences, seminars, continuing education courses, etc., among geotechnical teachers. 3) Take advantage of the telecommunication and all the new available communication systems to give and receive national and international courses in special topics.
