ABSTRACT

The MSc/Diploma in Geotechnical Engineering is offered jointly by the Department of Civil & Offshore Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh and the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Glasgow. The course has been offered since 1992, has an excellent employment record, and has the support of the main Geotechnical Consultants and Contractors in Scotland. It is one of the premier courses in the UK, offering advanced, up-to-date training in the theory and practice of geotechnical engineering. The course draws and builds on the wide range of complementary research strengths of the staff in the two Departments. The paper outlines the course structure, module syllabuses, and assessment techniques used, and describes our experiences with running the course and how it has developed over the past seven years. The direct role of industry in the course is discussed, along with future changes.
