ABSTRACT

The chaotic features in rock block slip process are simulated by discrete element method for the first time. The research shows that the different chaotic degree will occur when different variables such as stress, velocity etc. are used to describe the evolution of strata movement. The different parameters of rock physical and mechanical properties have different influence on the chaotic degree during the stratum block failure evolving process. That is, the higher shear modulus, volume modulus and joint modulus of rock body, the lower chaotic degree. But the rock body stiffness has little influence on the chaotic degree. The results are valuable for choosing variable to describe the evolution of unstable rock system and to quantitatively predict rock failure.
