ABSTRACT
The software development group of the CSIR Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek) is consolidating its software development processes towards a generic mining-visualization environment. The software group has long perceived a need for such an environment but licensing conditions attached to commercial visualization software have previously confounded project budgetary and distribution requirements. The VTK (Visualization ToolKit) Library is a high quality, open-source library for data visualization. Though written in C++, VTK can be used in conjunction with many scripting languages through the provision of wrappers. The VTK open-source licensing agreement permits the desired degree of autonomy, allowing the release of integrated software components with contrasting, individual distribution policies.
