ABSTRACT

Apatit Mining Company’s open pits are taken as an example here to show the relationship between large scale waste rock dumping on mountain terrain and polar climate with a lot of snow. The natural conditions were investigated and waste dump deformations are described. Safe and cost effective technology was developed and adapted for Apatit Mining Company’s phosphate operations at Khibiny Mountains, Kola Peninsula, Northwest Russia. Advanced dump disposal and operation under the severe northern condition saved a significant profit for Joint-Stock Company (now) “Apatit”. This technology is acceptable for many other open pits located in mountains and with snowy winter.
