ABSTRACT

The dams constructed of local materials are specific in their nature, first of all, because of the random geometrical shape of their body and second, because they are constructed of several types of materials. The materials that are commonly present in the dam body are crushed stone, gravel, clay and autochthonous media upon which dams are founded. This ensemble of materials is incorporated into layers with certain heights, according to procedures that are previously defined with the design requirements. Hence, the need of interpretation of horizontal sections of the darn body placed at random heights arises for the purpose of getting an insight into the excavations and amounts of materials to be incorporated between adjacent horizontal sections (layers). With the interpretation of horizontal sections, the boundaries of zones of individual types of materials (tipped stone, filtering zones, clayey core) are defined. In addition to such a possibility for interpretation of horizontal sections through the dam body formed at individual height levels, it is of particular interest to create the possibility for interpretation of vertical sections under normal or random angle to the dam axis as well as longitudinal sections along the dam axis. These cross sections are necessary as elements for better possible insight into the geometrical parameters of the dam body. Such horizontal and vertical cross sections through the dam body enable engineering correct and efficient automatic generation of 3D mathematical model of the dam composed of substructures, each substructure being composed of a certain number of finite elements. To create possibilities for generation and graphic interpretation of horizontal and vertical sections under a certain angle to the dam axis by means of which automatic generation of the 3D mathematical model composed of substructures shall be correctly and efficiently done, one should have a corresponding database available.
