ABSTRACT

A method proposed by the author is used to infer the stress state from striations or the sense of deformation of active faults in Japan. Data are obtained from fault outcrops in various locations and also from published articles and documents. In addition, a particular emphasis is put upon the stress state of Tokai region where an M8 class earthquake is expected. Results obtained from this method are compared with in-situ stress measurements performed in various parts of Japan. The inferred stress states and their implications are discussed.
