ABSTRACT

With the advance of longwall face, leg pressures develop in the chock shields with time and location. Different levels of loading occur on the shields due to different mining conditions including length of the immediate roof cantilever in the goaf, deteriorating of the roof, geological anomalies and condition of the adjoining supports. Severe roof rock stresses cause excessive shield loading. It results in safety problems and production loss. Further over loading of shields is a major concern for the stability of the longwall face in India. Therefore, continuous monitoring and analysis of roof stress influence on the supports is important.

A ‘Real time’innovative monitoring system was successfully developed for continuous monitoring and analysis of chock shields during mining operation. The system developed successfully recorded and evaluated many periodic falls and main falls during mining operation on real time. This paper briefly discuses its impact on safe mining operations for better production and productivity. It was successfully implemented in two Indian mines for better safety and productivity.
