ABSTRACT
There are two extreme explanations as to the origin of anatomically modem (AM) humans (Stringer & Andrews 1988). The Rapid Replacement Hypothesis argues for a single origin for AM humans, usually taking place in Africa and/or western Asia, and an outward migration and rapid replacement of all existing archaic populations (Stringer & Andrews 1988, Stringer et al. 1984). The Regional Continuity Hypothesis proposes that AM humans evolved in a number of geographical regions from already differentiated ancestral populations and argues for both morphological continuity within the differentiated geographical regions and the presence of distinct regional morphological features (Stringer & Andrews 1988, Wolpoff et al. 1984).
