Three dimensional stress measurements in jointed rock successfully performed by the hemispherical-ended borehole technique are presented, and the characteristics of rock stress and the influence of geological discontinuities are analyzed by comparing the stress measurement with numerical analysis. Furthermore, the normal stress and shear stress acting on the geological discontinuity are estimated by means of the stress transformation law from the stress measurements, and the strength criterion for the discontinuity is discussed.
