ABSTRACT

In the Netherlands there are about 40 000 specialized fruit farms. The total area under orchards almost amounts to 28 000 hectares, with apples accounting for the largest area (20 000 hectares). The chief varieties grown are : James Grieve, Cox’s 0.?., Golden Delicious, Boskoop, Jonathan and Lombarts calville. The most common pests which infect such orchards are the fruit-tree red spider mite (panonychus ulmi), the fruit leaf roller (Adoxophyes orana), the winter butterfly (Operophtera brumata), the fruit moth (Laspeyresia pomonella), lice (Rhopalosiphum insertum, Dysaphis plantaginea, Aphis pomi and Eriosoma lanigerum) and the green apple bug (Lugus pubulinus).
