ABSTRACT

Before à properly defined * integrated pest control scheme could be implemented, some preliminary work was urgently needed. In BadenWürttemberg this preliminary work was as follows:

Study of fauna of untreated apple trees and effects of insecticides and fungicides.

Testing of à modified spray regime on 2 ha of land.

Improvement of methods of supervision, definition of economic damage thresholds, further studies of risks to auxiliary organisms and extension of integrated crop protection to 35 ha of apple plantationsin production.

Extension of supervision and application of integrated protection methods to 200 ha.

Training of advisers and fruit growers in the application of integrated control to approximately 800 ha, studies of effects on growth and other undesirable side effects, studies of economic aspects, drawing up of guidelines for practical implementation, development of à scab warning device, etc.
