ABSTRACT

Among others, 25 specimens identified as Odontaster penicillatus were collected in area. Their taxonomic status and geographical distribution are described and discussed. Fisher proposed to unite the two species, formerly described as O. penicillatus and O. grayi, under the name of the first one, and to regard them as two formae. On the other hand, only few samples have been recorded from the Patagonian Shelf, as restricted to the coastal area between 40 S and 53 S. Important aspect regarding the distribution of this species is the question as to whether the formae penicillatus and grayi might be separated geographically. Ludwig proposed a differentiation which he based on their bathymetrical distribution, peni-cillatus being a deeper water species, while grayi was found only in depths of 0-35m. Our findings fill the gap between older recordings of Odontaster penicillatus on the Atlantic Coast of South America.
