ABSTRACT

Because of safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to choose a unit which is either large and slow-moving, or smaller and faster. Since output is proportional to both size and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A computer model was developed to simplify the optimization of vehicle size and speed, employing velocity-clearance data and productivity analyses. Program results give the practicing engineer and equipment designer insights as to equipment selection and evaluation in “encumbered space” conditions. The program further refines previously developed graphical and mathematical solution techniques, which will be briefly reviewed. An example of the model’s use will conclude the paper. The program considers changeable operating conditions in determining average velocity and accommodates any velocity-clearance data. Computer-generated graphics aid the user in interpreting results.
