ABSTRACT

Reference is made to the economic importance of citrus fruits in the Mediterranean region, after which the main species of destructive scale insects are mentioned and the characteristics of the damage which they cause are analysed. Such damage is reduced by effectively limiting population densities at the start of the season. The chemical control methods used in early intervention are based on the establishment of tolerance thresholds and the use of pheromones, while biological control involves the introduction of various exotic species. These different approaches are outlined on the basis of specific examples.
