ABSTRACT

Trichogramm mass-reared in the Azores facility are to be used in Algarve against Prays citrii. This pest is not a serious one in the Azores, but its existence in island conditions provides excellent field for research. The coccinellids mass-reared in the university facilities include a recently introduced exotic species. Harmonia axyridis, in order to control citrus aphids Toxoptera aurantii. Aphis gossypii and Aphis citricola. The med-fly, Ceratitis capitata has a great economic importance in the Azores and in Algarve. A pilot program is on the way in the Azores, where we expect to use both natural enemies (e. g. Opius concolor) and S.I.T. methods. In Madeira,Aleurothrixus floccosus is present, but it is absent from the Azores. Introduction of Cales noacki and probably Eretmocerus is expected to be of great help. The Algarve experience, where chemical control and introduction of Cales noacki has shown insufficient control, is expected to receive good improvement through the Madeira program.
