ABSTRACT

Field trials in Zimbabwe have shown that: 1) new traps are more effective than ox flyrounds for surveying Glossina pallidipes Aust. but poor for G. morsitans morsitans Westw.; 2) auto-sterilizing traps can control both species but are prohibitively complex, and 3) insecticide-coated targets can isolate and control populations of both species but need further refinement. Present research, in cooperation with other countries, is aimed mainly at identifying more odour attractants to use with traps and targets, but also at: 1) improving the design of traps and targets; 2) refining the insecticide formulations for targets; 3) simplifying the sterilizing devices, and 4) elucidating optimum placement patterns for baits.
