ABSTRACT

The I.E.M.V.T./G.T.Z. Centre for Research on Animal Trypanosomiasis at Bobo-Dioulasso has carried out a control programme for three tsetse fly species in a 3500 km2 area of seasonal grazing th the south of the town.

This campaign, which involved the integrated use of sterile males and insecticide-impregnated screens, was carried out In two phases between 1981 and 1984:

- during the first (preparatory) phase, a network of tracks was created in the area, entomological studies of the area were carried out and mass-rearing was developed in the laboratory for the following three tsetse fly species: G.p. gambiensis, G. tachinoides and G.m. submorsitans.

- during the second phase, that of actual control measures, the following two methods were alternated according to the season: insecticide-impregnated screens were set out in the dry season, while major releases of sterile males were carried out during the rainy season.

Enormous progress has been made in tsetse-rearing techniques, thus permitting large-scale use of the sterile male technique and at a cost competitive with that of other methods.
