ABSTRACT

Africa’s rapid population increase and the growing demand for a higher standard of living are leading to progressive meat shortages. Parallel to this development is an automatic rise in meat prices, causing a further reduction in the protein supply of the poorer groups of the population. Conventional farm animals are the main meat producers. Other sources are economically unimportant. The exploitation of game population for venison is a positive argument for the preservation of game animals, but it would be unrealistic to consider it primarily as a large scale contribution to the general meat supply. The campaign in Cameroun was accompanied by detailed and thorough investigations on the possible toxic effects of the insecticides. The Institute of Biogeography at the University of Saarbrücken was commissioned to undertake the observations.
