ABSTRACT

Tsetse infestation in Africa constitutes a major constraint to livestock development, as seven million sq. km. of potential grazing land is made inaccessible to livestock for grazing. In Nigeria about 75% of the total land area is tsetse infested. A tsetse eradication campaign launched about thirty years ago have cleared about 250.000 sq.km of land, which is now used for agriculture and other purposes. The method of control is by ground and aerial insecticide application. In 1979 a pilot integrated Sterile Insect Technique programme was started and has now cleared about 1000 sq.km of land. A second phase of the programme is planned to cover 10.000 sq.km.

A lot of work has been done in the field of tsetse control by Donor Agencies and national Governments but there is a general lack of coordination of these efforts. There is lack of an integrated control programme for Africa. Such a programme is necessary and should be implemented as a collective action between Donor Agencies and National Governments.
