ABSTRACT

The first Science and Technolgy Programme for Development was adopted by the Council of the European Communities on 3 December 1982and covered the period 1983 to 1986. Implemented by DG XII (Science and technology for development and cooperation with developing countries) in cooperation with DG VIII (Development), the programm aims at strengthening and promoting scientific and technical activities on the part of Member States and developing countries. The Commission, aided by a Management and Coordination Committee, has selected more than 220 projects out of 1300 proposals from 73 countries including 9 Member States of the European Community. They should also stimulate or consolidate links or agreements between research teams in Europe and those in developing countries, leading to the eventual development of research networks or, at least, to more efficient exchange of information.
