ABSTRACT

A recent study in Greece on the etiology of pith necrosis revealed that the causal agent is either Pseudomonas viridiflava or another pseudomonad of the syringae group, and that the existence of pathogenic isolates of Pseudomonas fluorescens should be investigated. Bacterial Canker and Speck diseases are the most important, economically, mainly because they cause considerable crop losses and are very common throughout the Country. Control is based on the use of disease-free seed or seed treatment, destruction of crop residues, use of proper sanitary measures and copper compounds and/or antibiotics sprays. Stem lesions are a very common symptom of Bacterial Speck infections and may be easily confused with other tomato diseases.
