ABSTRACT

Mysidacea exhibit two distinct modes of feeding. Feeding may be accomplished by filtration of suspended food material or by ingestion of large food masses. Conflicting hypotheses have been proposed, on the basis of observations made with the light microscope, to explain the functions of the appendages and their setae in the filtration of particles. Hypotheses have also been put forward to explain at the cytological level the mode of functioning and the role of setae in the detection of large food masses.
