ABSTRACT

Groundwater protection strategy, policy and management is analyzed with spatial regard to: environmentally sound development and protection of groundwater resources, technical and economic constraints within which groundwater must be protected, social policy particularly with respect to the potential impact of polluted water on human health and cultural and historical tradition of the society. The concept of groundwater protection strategy is based on a long -term multidimensional programme, managed, coordinated, subsidized and implemented by governmental authorities. The objective of groundwater protection policy is timely identification and analysis of potential conflicting issues and constraints, formulation, quantification, analysis and validation of competitive factors, hierarchical screening with the aim of finding a balance between groundwater protection, economic development and social and health implications with a view to the short term and long term prospects. The objectives of groundwater protection management is to ensure the quality, safety and sustainability of groundwater as a drinking water source and a valuable component of the environment.
