ABSTRACT

Fenugreek, botanically identified as Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn, of family Papilionaceae, is cited as Methika in Ayurveda classics. Since ancient times it has been in use as dietary item and a reputed medicinal herb. Ayurveda has provided insight for judicious use of Methika (fenugreek) for health promotion and disease management.

Material and methods: A systematic review of Ayurveda classics and Ayurvedic lexicons (Nighantus) was done to gather relevant Ayurveda information about the herb fenugreek. The contemporary review on fenugreek was done from web sources and books. The information was critically analyzed and systematically presented so readers can understand the pharmacodynamics and potential areas for therapeutic benefit and research of fenugreek on the basis of Ayurveda principles and as per contemporary evidence.

It was found that fenugreek has been in use since ancient times but in Ayurveda it is mentioned firstly in Ayurvedic lexicons (Nighantus). The important pharmacodynamic attributes are that it is bitter in taste and hot in potency. The specific characteristic of the herb is its Vata kapha pacifying potential. The herb and its dosages forms are enumerated to promote digestion and mitigate Vata disorders (neurological problems). The research studies indicate that fenugreek is beneficial for type 2 diabetes mellitus, breast cancer, oxidative stress, hyperlipidaemia, and postmenopausal hormone regulation, polycystic ovarian syndrome in females, and testosterone level and sperm profile in males.

It is concluded that fenugreek is a well-documented, experienced Ayurveda herb. The evidence of its various pharmacological potentials is well recorded in contemporary research. Further, its potential as a hair growth promoter and its galactagogue activity may be explored more. Neurological disorders (Vata disorders) are also an untouched area for research where fenugreek has promising potential as per Ayurveda.
