ABSTRACT

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is a well-known spice and food ingredient used by humankind for centuries. Recently, fenugreek became a vital source of active medicinal and nutritional ingredients. Therefore, many fenugreek-based products have been marketed as nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, traditional medicine, and complementary medicines worldwide. However, the numerous regulatory frameworks for such products in terms of product categories, approvals, listings, or licensing are diverse. This chapter is a review and compilation of the regulatory status of the fenugreek-based products in four countries, namely the USA, Australia, Canada, and India, where well-defined regulatory frameworks for approval of natural nutritional and medicinal ingredients based on traditional and modern evidence exist.
